The following letter appears in this week’s issue of the Gazette.
To the Editor:
For many people, this week’s New York Primary marked the beginning of the 2016 political season. This November, in addition to the national and state races that will dominate the news, two seats on the village Board of Trustees will also be up for election.

On behalf of Croton United, I invite any village resident with an interest in serving as a Trustee to contact us to discuss the process of running for office. For those who are unfamiliar, Croton United is a nonpartisan community organization—not a political party—that for the last two years has run a slate of independent, non-party affiliated candidates for village office.

Our focus is exclusively local, so Croton United does not require that its candidates be affiliated with any particular national political party. We believe that national party affiliations, and the partisanship that can result, are a distracting and counterproductive influence at the local level. After all, as Fiorello LaGuardia said, “There is no Democratic or Republican way of cleaning the streets.”
