This letter was published in last week’s issue of the Gazette.

Dear Editor,
I have a very good friend running for Village Trustee, Ken Walsh. 

When he told me he was running a few months back, I asked him why he would want to do that. I thought he was crazy. It reminded me of a few years ago when he told me he was coaching our fourth grade girls CYO basketball team. I asked him then the same question, “Why?” 

I told him then he was crazy. His response to me was that we, yes we—he is very persistent and persuasive, can teach the girls about teamwork, while they learn new skills and have fun? I have sat next to him on the sidelines for three seasons. 

I have seen his passion and dedication from weeks before the season, to late night phone calls and emails all to figure out how each girl will get to play in half the game and give the girls the best chance to win. I have seen his intensity to make sure that all the girls have the best experience. I have seen him take on the old boys club to level the playing field so the girls get the same respect as the boys. Why did he do all of this? Because that was the position he chose. 

My experience coaching with Ken has shown me how dedicated he really is. How he would have to deal with different personalities and take input, whether solicited or unsolicited, and keep a happy medium with all parties involved. Ken took a team that won one game in third grade, the year prior to us coaching, to four wins in fourth grade, to seven wins in fifth grade, to an undefeated season of 12-0 in sixth grade. All of this while working full-time and obtaining a Master’s degree. I would say that is a pretty good accomplishment.

Ken has been a true friend to me and many other people that I know. He is always willing to lend a hand. Four years ago, Ken took on a leadership role to help bring in younger families to the Holy Name of Mary St. Patrick’s Day dinner. He has helped out with the Knights of Columbus Oktoberfest and Holy Name of Mary Summerfest. I have always been able to count on him.

Writing this letter is out of character for me. When Ken told me that he was running, I wanted to help him out. I hope that you will join me in electing an honest and dedicated person. A true gentleman.
